The defined diameter of metric bolts is actually slightly larger than the actual diameter of the bolt shaft. So an M8 bolt would have a shaft diameter that's slightly under 8mm which means that the bolt should fit through an 8mm hole.

This number indicates the outer diameter of the thread, measured in millimetres. As an example, a hex bolt with a thread size of M8 would have an outer diameter of 8mm.

A: A 5/16 Hanger Bolt and M8 (or 8mm) hanger bolt are very similar in size, but have different threading on them. Because of this different threading, a 5/16 hanger bolt is not compatible with an M8 bolt.

What does M8 1.25 bolt mean?
For metric fasteners, you will see a M8 x 1.25 or an M8 x 1. For thread pitch, the distance between two points is the second number meaning the higher the number the fewer threads there are. This means the M8 x 1.25 is the coarse threading and the M8 x 1 is the fine thread.
When using the M8 Bolt, you will need to drill a 8mm diameter hole into the substrate and there will need to be a 10mm diameter clearance hole in the item to be fixed in position.

Four nickles, or 8mm, would measure 1/4 inch.
1 Inches = 25.4 MM.
The 8mm is a smaller ring diameter, and the 10mm is a bigger ring diameter.
A lot of tool manufacturers consider 5/16 and 8mm interchangeable. 5/16 is roughly 2 thousandths of an inch smaller, 0.06096mm but on a hardened Allen bolt that should not be significant, and I have never stripped the interior socket of a harden steel Allen bolt.

So, a 1/4-20 screw has a 1/4" diameter (. 250") with 20 threads per inch. Sometimes the terms “coarse” (or UNC/Unified Coarse Thread) or “fine” (UNF/Unified Fine Thread) are used to describe the thread. The term does not refer to the quality of the thread but rather to the frequency of threads per inch.
What size screw is best?
Screws come in gauges 2 through 16. Most of the time you'll want to go with a #8 screw. If working with very thick or heavy material, go for #12-14, or with finer woodworking, #6 are often the best choice.

RE: General Rule: Minimum Thickness for Threading
Assuming you're wanting to use a standard M8 thread (1.25mm pitch), after threading and deburring you're likely to have less than one full thread remaining. You'd be better off using a rivet-type stud, or a spot welded stud.

Is M8 1.25 the same as 5 16?
The pitch of M8 threads is 1.25mm. And, TPI (Threads Per Inch) of 5/16 UNC threads is 18, which can be converted to 1.41mm per pitch. Therefore, there is no chance to fit a M8 bolt to a 5/16 nut.
