Anyone with more experience in writing and drawing will usually choose a pencil with the medium degree of hardness HB; some feel most comfortable with the degree of hardness F. People who want to express themselves artistically use soft pencils of hardness grades 2B to 8B.

2b pencils are good for drawing your initial sketches because they are hard enough to create crisp lines that are easy to erase, yet soft enough to create lines that are dark enough to be seen. Any pencils within the 2H to 4B range can be great choices that are just the right hardness for sketches.

Types Of Drawing Pencils

Graphite pencils: These are the most common pencils used in art and writing. Charcoal pencils: Create dark and rough lines, but not as versatile as the other options. Colored pencils: Similar to normal graphite pencils but in color.

2B and HB are two grades of pencils with different shades. The key difference between 2B and HB pencil is that writing from 2B pencil is darker than that from HB pencil. Moreover, 2B pencils produce very dark lines while HB pencils produce medium line density.

Best Pencils for General Shading

Generally, the B pencil is good for medium to light shading. The 2B is nice for medium to dark shading. You should be able to get a good range of tone (value) out of both, from quite light through a nice dark.

The letter “F” is also used to indicate that the pencil sharpens to a fine point. Historically, pencil makers also use combinations of letters — a pencil marked “HB” is hard and black; a pencil marked “HH” is very hard, and a pencil marked “HHBBB” is very hard and really, really black!

B-grade. The B-grade pencil has more soft graphite to create dark strokes as the 'B' stands for blackness. The higher the number corresponding with the grade, the softer and darker the lead will be. The B-grade pencils smudge easily, which will make them perfect for shading, and are the most commonly used for it.

Lead pencils are graded on a scale from No. 1 to No. 4 based on how much graphite is inside the core. The #1 pencils are the softest, while the #4 pencils are the hardest. This system was invented by famed author Henry David Thoreau in the 1820s.

Is B or HB darker?

The "F" pencil is similar in mark to an "HB" pencil, only slightly lighter. Like an "HB" pencil, it is capable of producing darker and lighter marks, but without any extremes. The graphite material found in an "F" pencil is slightly harder than an "HB" pencil meaning that it can stay sharp for a longer period of use.

Both are pretty much equally easy to erase, especially between HB and 2B. It is much more about the way the mark was made than the lead it was made with that determines how easy it is to lift off. Same goes for very soft and very hard leads.

What is an F pencil used for? F pencils are optimal tools to use for writing just as HB pencils are. Since the tip of an F pencil is slightly pointier and harder than the tip of an HB pencil, you can also use the F pencil for any kind of precise freehand drawing.

The lead has a diameter of 2 mm and is 2B graded. It's ideal for use in school exams or simply for everyday use.

The best pencils for drawing and sketching are a HB, 2B, 6B and 9B. Far better than buying a whole set of pencils, most of which will never be used.

If you are sketching use a medium (HB) or hard pencil (2H – 9H) for technical drawing and small details. The soft pencils (2B – 9B) are used to provide deep darks and shadows.

Is B or 2B darker?

Soft leads are graded using the letter 'B' to designate how 'black' the mark they make is. Numbers are then used to indicate the degree of softness - the higher the number the softer the lead and the blacker the mark. For example, a 2B lead is softer than a B lead and will produce a blacker mark.

But if you require a darker line, do not choose a very hard pencil and try to apply a lot of pressure as this will only damage the surface. Instead choose a slightly softer/blacker pencil with a lower number. The Blacker side of the range of grades has a greater ratio of graphite to binder as the number goes up.

2B, 3B and 4B are increasingly soft. Further up the range, 9B is the very softest lead available, but so soft and crumbly that it's rarely used. Anything over 4B is probably too soft for most people's day-to-day use. Harder leads than HB get H ratings.

If you can remember this, you're set... In the past, pencil makers have used combinations of letters to tell us more information about the graphite; a pencil marked HB is both hard and black, a pencil marked HH is very hard, and a pencil marked BB” is very black.

The more easily a graphite mark will smudge – the more easily it will erase. So no matter how lightly you draw with a hard pencil (6H) it will be harder to erase than a soft pencil (HB or 2B).

6H is the lightest and hardest grade pencil; 8B is the darkest and softest grade. This is based on Faber-Castell's line of pencils. There are other manufactures that may make lighter and darker pencils, but they are not typical of what you will find on the market.

By combining "H" and "B" pencils in a drawing, smooth transitions of tone can be developed without compromising a full range of value. "H" pencils are clearly capable of producing light marks, but are limited in the range of tone. Putting more pressure on a "4H" pencil will not result in a very dark mark.

For simple sketching, the HB pencil is probably the most popular, with artists also favoring the H and the B pencils. For preliminary sketches that will be used as a guide for a painting or illustration, the lighter 2H–4H pencils are ideal.
